What is Humane Society?
Humane society is basically the group that is dedicated to prevent abuse or cruelty or similar issues to animals or humans. In various countries, the term is being used primarily for societies to prevent cruelty to animals. Now in the UK, this can be something that provides recovery service, waterways rescue or perhaps, something that is giving awards to distinctive individual for saving a life.
The very first humane society in the US was the ASPCA or American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, which is founded in 1866 in New York City by Henry Bergh. Then just after two years it was founded, the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals or MSPCA was formed. In the year 2012, the Oregon Humane Society snagged the largest portion of animals in the US with about 97 percent adoption rate and also, 98 percent save rate for an estimated 11000 adoptions made every single year.
The humane societies operating in the US are all independent of similarly named national organizations similar to American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals or ASPCA or Humane Society of the United States or HSUS. While the local organizations are primarily concerned with sheltering, euthanasia of animals and adoption, these national organizations are coordinating and addressing bigger issues that are beyond the resources or scope of independent, smaller groups.
As a matter of fact, Humane Society of the United States doesn’t operate, fund or control local groups. It does however providing supporting grants, standards of care, training of animal care personnel as well as evaluation services. Apart from that, the HSUS are working often with shelters in big scale animal disaster and rescue operations, assist in transporting and caring of rescued animals, evaluation and triage. If you think that is all, the HSUS can also do national promotion of the animal shelter and adoption be it alone or by getting sponsorships of other like-kind charities.
Back in 1994, Chronicle of Philanthropy which is an industry publication has released the results of the biggest study of non-profit and charitable organization credibility and popularity. According to the study made, Humane Society of the United States is at the 6th position out of 100 charities for being the most popular non-profit group in America.
Some of the local humane society shelters are being referred as No Kill. This is described as a shelter wherein animals are euthanized for two reasons, if they’re suffering from an untreatable medical condition and when they have serious behavior problems which makes them unfit for adoption.
